Dharmottara’s Visit through Kalhaṇa’s Lens

Abstract

Ever since Hultzsch’ identification of Dharmottara (740–800) in Kalhaṇa’s Rājataraṅgiṇī (4.498) with the famous Buddhist philosopher of that name, his accompanying translation, too, has been widely accepted as definite. This led to the fuller assumption that Dharmottara was invited by King Jayāpīḍa and that the arrival of the renowned Buddhist scholar in Kashmir was most warmly welcomed.
